Take a Moment and Learn how to Pause

sun journey at catspaw studioLook out the window.  Just look.

Listen to the silence.  Use earbuds to block out ambient noise; turn off the radio in the car.  Try it for, say, 5 minutes.  Use the timer on your phone.

Most of us know what we really need, but we are afraid to listen.  Instead, we distract ourselves by filling every moment with sensory input.  But not every moment needs to be filled with sensory stimulation.  Yes, learning to pause like this takes practice, but is is well worth the effort.  It may make you more productive.

Resolutions are just reminders to do what we already know

Everyone I know is either sick or exhausted, even though the new year just started.  Right off the bat, many of us already feel behind on our resolutions.

The dictionary defines resolution as “a firm decision to do or not to do something.”  It defines a reminder as “a thing that causes someone to remember something.”

list These two definitions so similar that we can think of resolutions simply as reminders.  For example, suppose you resolve to “practice yoga starting January 1st,” or “go to spin class starting January 1st.”   When February 1st comes around and you still haven’t done these things, it’s common to give up because you broke your resolution.  But just like we get reminders to pay bills, why can’t we treat a “broken” resolution simply as a reminder to begin what we have committed to in our hearts?  When you think of your resolutions, think of them as gentle prods to meditate, or not eat that trigger food, or to practice yoga, or to ________ (fill in the blank).  Hit the reminder button instead of dragging out the great scroll of failed resolutions.

A lot of people claim to have “the way” to stay on track, through motivational mantras or just plain shaming us into doing something.  But sometimes it may be as simple as writing that thing down on your to-do list. The one thing we all have to determine is what will help us remember that thing.  For me, it’s reminding myself how much better I feel after Yoga and meditation.

At Catspaw Studio, we believe that art, yoga and meditation help us to remember – they gently remind us – of what we already know.

Having an Opportunity to make a Fresh Start

Following all the signs from nature, we’re reminded of the opportunity to start fresh everyday.

This time of year it gets darker and colder.  There are holiday celebrations and a new year is coming. All of this can lead us to a new beginnings and intentions.  Having an opportunity to make a fresh start is exciting and maybe little anxious.

When we have a lot of things pulling at us – especially this time of year – it’s important to find a moment, or several little moments, to bring ourselves back to center.

The Winter Solstice is the time of ending and beginning,  a powerful time — a time to contemplate your immortality.  A time to forgive, to be forgiven, and to make a fresh start.  A time to awaken.  Frederick Lenz

Ideas to help us start fresh or reset, on a daily or regular basis, can include:

  • setting  a reminder on your phoncatspaw cushionse to stand and focus on your breath
  • have a cushion in your office to sit on between appointments or meetings
  • set a corner in your home to unplug and sit
  • if you’re driving and come to red light, take in a few deep breaths
  • where ever you are come back to your breath
  • write down a do-able intention
